About us

We do need mask:

According to World Health Organization (WHO,) the COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets and potentially airborne transmission as the newest studies had discovered. Therefore, practicing preventative raspatory procedures such as wearing masks is crucial to prevent and to slower the further spread of COVID-19 in our community. Masks become an indispensable part of our new normal.

What we don't see

The drastically increased demand for masks during the pandemic, which potentially will continue into the post-pandemic period, not only causes producing and servicing pressure on the governments and the manufactures, but also poses danger to our already-fragile environment. Although receiving littler deserved attention, is one that cannot be ignored.

What we should see

The used mask is a new kind of plastic pollution we should pay more attention during the pandemic. We don’t know for how long the Covid-19 will stay with us, but through concerted actions, we can break this new plastic wave. Begin today, always throw your masks in bins!

About

Plastic Fact

A mask that is ingested by a local turtle, pink dolphin or finless porpoise, for example, could easily become stuck in the digestive system of this animal, thereby killing it. More than 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and over a million seabirds are killed by marine plastic annually. Moreover, a majority of masks are made of polypropylene, which does not degrade quickly. By estimation, over eight million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans every year. This plastic does not disappear but instead slowly breaks down into micro-plastic, which enters food chains. Now, with hundreds of millions of masks consumed everyday, marine plastic pollution will be a serious problem to be dealt with.

Let's try it out!

Type the regional population in your area and a guessed percentage of how many masks an average person in your region will use every day. You will get an estimation that for one year, how many, and how heavy the masks will be consumed, as well as how many seabirds and ocean mammals these mask waste are able to kill if not disposed of well.
